Future Worm is an upcoming Disney ‘XD’ show from creator Ryan Quincy (Out There, South Park) about a twelve year old boy who discovers time travel and teams up with a fearless worm from the future (also a special appearance by a robotic fish who explodes in every episode). They’ve got a fantastic cast and crew, and most importantly – it’s funny. All the pieces are here for a great show – and by the looks of it, they are trying some new stuff to make sure this launch is successful.
Last week, Disney finally announced an air date for Future Worm – and for it they are trying something a little different – doing a stepped launch across multiple platforms. Smart.
Each 11 minute broadcast episode is composed of a 7 and a 3 minute episode – ok, slightly unusual these days, but it’s been done often enough. The smart part: The 3 minute episodes will also air on Youtube. Clips of both will be in the Disney ‘XD’ app. Not sure if kids really like clips, but they are clearly trying to drive viewers to the channel. The online / app stuff launches on July 11 with the series launch on the Disney ‘XD’ channel on August 1.
This show is yet another example of Disney doing some great cartoons for the ‘XD’ platform. If they keep making these kinds of bets, Disney ‘XD’ will inevitably hit some good traction and give CN a run for their money in the cable boys 6-11 market. I have lots of friends who have worked on it / are working on it, so I wish the best for the Future Worm crew and their series launch.
